"Pay Back to Society — समाजाला परतफेड"

Thoughts of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar —

"Be your own light — Appo Deepo Bhava"

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar

The Core Message: A Call to Service

English

Dr. Ambedkar's thoughts on "paying back to society" were not just a moral suggestion, but a central and urgent demand he made of the educated and empowered members of the oppressed communities.

His vision was deeply intertwined with the idea that education and success carried a profound responsibility to uplift the entire community, not just the individual.

His most direct statement came from a historic speech delivered in Agra on March 18, 1956, just nine months before his death. In this speech, he expressed deep pain and anguish:

"There is some progress on education in our society. By acquiring education, some people have reached higher positions; but these educated people have deceived me. I was hoping from them that after acquiring higher education they will serve the society; but what I am seeing is that a crowd of small and big clerks has gathered around, who are busy feeding themselves and their families."

The Responsibility of the Educated

English

Ambedkar's philosophy on education was never about individual advancement alone. He believed that true education had a social purpose:

A Sacred Duty: He advised students and young men to "inculcate a spirit of service to their community" and warned that they should never forget this duty, regardless of their status or position.

The Purpose of Knowledge: He stated that knowledge was the foundation of life and that students must develop their thinking power to solve the "actual problems which the people had to face."

A Clear Duty: He explicitly advised Scheduled Caste students to perform their duties and discharge their responsibilities in the "service of the Down-trodden masses."

A Collective, Not Individual, Goal

English

Ambedkar's strategy for "payback" was collective. He believed that the advancement of a few individuals was meaningless unless it raised the entire community:

Key Positions as Levers: He suggested that the best students from backward classes should be sent for higher education and then placed in "key positions of Government services." He argued that this would automatically raise the social position of the whole caste, not just the individual.

Organizing for Power: His famous slogan, "Educate, Agitate, and Organize," was a blueprint for this collective action. Education was the first step, but it was meant to lead to organization and struggle for the rights of all.

Financial Contribution: He also asked his followers to "contribute part of their earnings for their community" and work for their federation, emphasizing that they had not yet reached their goal.

In Essence

English

Dr. Ambedkar's concept of "paying back to society" was a powerful rejection of the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality.

He saw the progress of any individual from an oppressed community as a result of collective struggle and sacrifice, and therefore, that individual had a sacred, non-negotiable debt to work for the liberation of all.
